NEW ZEALAND’S LARGEST THOROUGHBRED REHOMING OPERATION

EventStars Ltd was founded by Gina Lee Schick over 20 years ago to cater to a gap in the New Zealand sport horse market by supplying riders with reasonably priced youngsters. She recognised the versatility and trainability of Thoroughbreds both on and off the track, and sought to help address the issue of the high number of racehorses retiring each year without homes.

Today, our primary focus is rehoming Hong Kong Restart horses - part of the Hong Kong Jockey Club’s dedicated Retired Racehorse Retraining Programme. This long-running initiative provides exceptional care and structured retraining for retiring Thoroughbreds, and we are proud to be part of the “Overseas Connections” pathway. EventStars works closely with the HKJC to bring these horses to New Zealand, retrain them further, and place them into new sport or pleasure homes where they can thrive in their second careers.

While most of our work now centres around the Restart horses, we still occasionally rehome local Thoroughbreds when the right opportunity arises. Applications for these horses can be made through the Rehoming Application section of our website here.

Approximately 300+ off the track thoroughbreds have been rehomed by the EventStars team each year with the help of their partners - many of which have gone on to compete successfully at the top level in their new careers.
